Little Brook, NS – June 7, 2021: The Municipality of Clare, in partnership with Fierté CLARE Pride, held a Pride flag raising ceremony to usher in the second edition of Pride Week in the rural community.
The goal of Fierté CLARE Pride, which runs from June 7 to 12, 2021, is to show love and support from and towards the LGBTQ2+ community with a week of fun, informative and inclusive programming for everyone.
Ronnie LeBlanc, Warden for the Municipality of Clare, spoke about empathy and diversity. “There is a difference between being a pleasant neighbour and being a welcoming neighbour. Every resident has the right to feel at home, in Clare and everywhere else. And every resident has a responsibility to support those who need it most with love and inclusion. A community that flourishes with diversity also flourishes with solidarity.”
Université Sainte-Anne student Renée Blinn raised the Pride flag. She reflected: “I know that the first flag raising [in 2019] gave me and many others the comfort of knowing that we are not alone and that our community supports us. Let us continue to live with pride.”
Due to physical distancing directives, the event was broadcast live through the group’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/FierteClarePride). However, a handful of guests were permitted to attend the flag raising, including Jack Murphy. Wearing his rainbow vest, the widower lovingly remembered his husband of 17 years, with whom he enjoyed attending Pride events all over Nova Scotia. “We never hid who we were, and we were always welcome in Clare,” he said.
