Our first Gran Fondo Baie Sainte-Marie was a great success!

More than 400 cyclists gathered for the first annual event of this kind in Clare. The great weather and the dedcated work carried out by the organizing committee and the enormous number of dedicated volunteers (individuals, service groups, security, health and safety teams), all contributed to the event’s success. Many of the cyclists commented that they were deeply touched by the number of residents of Clare who stepped out of their homes to cheer them on along the route. They said that it gave them encouragement, and for some, a sense of pride and reinforced their competitive spirit. At the end of the ride, the cyclists gathered at the Saulnierville Legion for the awards ceremony where they enjoyed a delicious BBQ pork dinner.

The cyclists crossed the starting line at 8:30am and Lisa Pasolli from Antigonish was the first to complete the Piccolo Fondo (35 km) in 1 hour and 16 minutes. As for the Gran Fondo of 117.9km, it was Jeff Muise from Yarmouth who crossed the finish line, cheered on by spectators, at a recorded time of 3 hours and 17 minutes. He was followed by over 250 other cyclists who took up to eight hours to complete the course. We would like to thank all the volunteers and sponsors for their support during this event, your help was greatly appreciated. We are proud to announce the dates for the next year; mark your calendars for September 24th and 25th 2016.

« On behalf of the Gran Fondo Baie Sainte-Marie organizing committee, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the residents of Clare for your overwelming support of our event. Your welcoming attitude and outpouring of Acadian hospitality are truly what made the Gran Fondo such a success. You are the reason others see our community as such a wonderful place. Thank you ».
